OBD Mode

Control unit programming through the OBD diagnostic socket

The DFOX® OBD mode allows the programming of engine control units (ECU) and automatic transmissions (TCU) through the vehicle’s diagnostic socket, with no need to remove the control unit. This method guarantees fast and efficient operations, ideal for workshops that work with short turnaround times.

DFOX® communicates serially with the control unit through the OBD cable supplied, handling standard protocols such as CAN bus, K-line, L-line and other automotive protocols. The DFOX V2 software guides the operator through every stage, from the preliminary checks to the final writing with automatic checksum.

OBD Programming with DFOX®: Connection via Diagnostic Port

With the kit supplied it is possible to read and write the control unit using the OBD cable directly, leaving the control unit fitted on the vehicle.

For older vehicles that do not have the standard 16 pin OBD socket, DFOX® makes it possible to connect through adapters, following the wiring diagrams provided in the software or using our cables.

The OBD cable supplied is designed to guarantee signal stability during reading and writing operations, reducing the risk of communication interruptions.

Advanced OBD Features

Virtual Reads from the DFB Servers

As well as the real reading of the control unit, many drivers also offer virtual reads: when available, the software connects to the DFB Technology servers and downloads in a few seconds the file of the software version present in the vehicle’s control unit.

This function speeds the operating process up considerably, reducing reading times. Virtual reads are particularly useful when the original file is needed for comparison or when working on vehicles whose control units are slow to read over OBD.

The virtual file database is constantly updated with new software versions, continuously extending the coverage available.

Forced Recovery

DFOX® offers a forced recovery function that makes it possible to recover full dialogue with the control unit should something go wrong during programming.

Critical situations handled by the recovery:

  • OBD cable accidentally disconnected during writing
  • Laptop battery flat during the operation
  • Sudden interruption of communication
  • Control unit that no longer responds after writing an incorrectly modified file

Forced recovery re establishes communication and makes it possible to complete the programming or to restore the original backup file saved automatically before the operation.

Back to Stock and Upgrade/Downgrade

The DFOX V2 software includes functions dedicated to changing the software version of the ECU.

Back to stock:

restoring the original factory configuration of the control unit, bringing all parameters back to the values set by the manufacturer. A particularly useful function when the vehicle is being sold or to undo changes made previously.

Upgrade version software:

updating the control unit to more recent software versions released by the vehicle manufacturer.

Software version downgrade:

restoring a previous software version of the control unit, useful in case of problems linked to recent updates or for specific operational needs.

These functions are available for the supported vehicles and are carried out with automatic compatibility checks, in order to avoid the risk of errors during the operations.

Advantages of OBD Programming with DFOX®

Before programming the vehicle’s control unit, DFOX® automatically calculates and corrects the Checksum, RSA and CVN of the file and runs the checks needed to avoid any vehicle starting problem.

Maximum operational safety:
Operational speed

Programming through the OBD port is the fastest method for working on the vehicle’s control units. It requires no removal of components, no opening of the control unit and no soldering or direct connections on the PCB.

Thanks to this operating mode, the vehicle can be ready in a short time, optimizing the workshop’s workflow.

Using the OBD connection also allows DFOX® to work with maximum safety in reading and programming operations, reducing intervention times and minimizing the risk of damaging the control unit.
